When Adam's descendants needed to boost their virility, they watched what happened in nature around them. Stalking wild stallions for food long before he climbed on their backs and tamed them, early man saw the most sexually active animals were also the ones who grazed most heavily on Avena Sativa – Wild Oats. Soon he too was “sowing his own wild oats”.
§ Avena sativa is a botanical extract has centuries of use in traditional medicine to increase strength, improve emotional health and relieve stress.
§ References to the stimulating effects of avena sativa – wild oat straw - have been found up to 200 years ago in the German Pharmacopoeia
§ Modern studies at the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality have shown that avena sativa aids sexual arousal. However this research was not published in a peer reviewed journal.
Volunteers aged 22 to 64 participated in a study to determine how effective Avena Sativa was in achieving sexual enhancement. The subject's sexual dysfunction or dissatisfaction ranged from impotence to a female lack of desire and inability to respond sexually.
Participants took a 300mg capsule of Avena Sativa three days a week for six weeks. A follow up study showed men experienced increased sex drive, enhanced erections and more pleasure during sex when taking Avena Sativa.
A 1986 study with volunteers who expressed interest in improving their sexual response showed men experienced a 22% increase in genital sensation and women a 15% increase. Men experienced a 36% increase in frequency of orgasm and women a 29% increase.
Avena sativa has been found to help access testosterone, which becomes increasingly bound to various compounds in the body with advancing age.
Most positive effects of testosterone, including sex drive, are attributed to free testosterone, while bound testosterone is linked to enlarged prostates.
How avena sativa assists with testosterone is unclear, but it is thought that it occurs through an increase in Luteinizing Hormone levels, (LH) just like Tribulus Terrestris. Avena Sativa seems to work in a beneficial synergy with Tribulus Terrestris.
Avena sativa is a recognized mood enhancer, which also supports testosterone in men and women, with assistance for sex drive. Traditionally used as a remedy to help with recovery from exhaustion and low mood, it works well as an adjunct to tribulus terrestris, enhancing feelings of well being and restoring energy. Avena Sativa has also been used to beat addictions, notably nicotine withdrawal when giving up smoking.
No adverse effects to the central nervous or cardiovascular systems were noted in any of the studies that were undertaken. No known negative effects presently exist where avena sativa is used as a dietary supplement.
